Despite differences in the size of the market, production output, and the mix of technologies used in the nonwoven fabric industries in the United States and the People's Republic of China, the type of emulsions used in nonwoven and textile applications are very similar. In 1996, the United States and Chinese nonwoven and textile markets for manmade latex polymers reached 337,000 dry pounds. Demand in these two market segments should increase to 377,000 dry tons by 2001. The nonwoven fabric industry uses latex polymers as binding agents. The textile industry uses latex polymers for coatings, binders, and adhesives. Major trends in the united States industry include an increased use of thermal bonding, overcapacity in spunbonding, and an increased use of spun laced products. Major trends in the Chinese industry include the increased use of spunlaid and melt blown technologies. 7 refs.
