Researchers developed new statistical characteristics for analyzing the irregularity of nonwoven fabrics based on homogeneity and nonhomogeneity of random field irregularity (RFI). Characteristics of nonwoven fabric irregularity that are important to practical applications are classified as outliers of RFI beyond or beneath a fixed level. An RFI z(x,y) that exceeds a fixed threshold (V) is a positive outlier (jut). An RFI z(x,y) of less than V is a negative outlier (hole). To determine the area and volume of outliers, researchers conducted a statistical analysis of RFI outliers, demonstrated their use for real and theoretical RFI of nonwoven fabrics, and analyzed some practical aspects associated with Linnik functional as applied to textiles. A simulation depicted the influence of nonhomogeneous RFI on outliers. Experiments used Linnik functionals to study the microscale and macroscale of irregularity. 11 refs.
