Stitch bonded fabrics were developed in Europe in the 1950s. The early concept, which involved stitching through a fibrous material to add integrity and strength, has grown into an array of complex and complicated products. Many variations on the original process use special needles to yield products with special properties. Some current stitch bonding processes do not use yarn, but entangle fibers within the nonwoven web. The global industry today consists of more than 3,600 stitch bonding machines that produce more than 1.5 billion square meters of fabrics per year. The finished fabrics weigh 40-800 grams per square meter with stitches that range from 2-15 per square inch.
