Disposable diaper coverstock accounts for approximately 50 percent of the United States coverstock market and remains the largest growth area for spun bonded fabrics. Overall growth in the spun bonded fabric market is expected to be 7 percent per year during the next several years. Other growth areas include hygiene products, geotextiles, roofing, carpet backing, medical wrap, and envelopes. Although initial investment costs are high ($15-$20 million in 1986 dollars) for a new spun bonded fabric manufacturing plant, the high productivity of the plants and the growing market largely offset this drawback. The majority of spun bonded fabrics are based on isotactic polypropylene or polyester. 70 refs.
