High loft nonwoven fabrics are at least 3 millimeters thick and contain not more than 10 percent solids by volume. Chute feeding systems deliver the opened fibers to the carding and air laying machines with uniform weight in the machine and cross directions. Modern carding machines produce a 3 OSY web at a rate of more than 50 meters per minute. Parallel fiber orientation results in a machine to cross direction strength ratio of 8:1. Randomizers reduce the fiber orientation to strength ratio to 3:1. Web stabilization occurs via chemical binding agents (usually latex and water emulsions) or through thermal bonding using melt fibers, bicomponent fibers, or fusible bonding powders.
