Researchers studied the structure of air laid fabrics manufactured from viscose fibers and determined the effects of suction conditions. A Kroyer type air entangling machine with rotating blades formed the sample fabrics. Laser Doppler velocimetry measured velocity fields. A Kodak EKTAPRO HS Moion Analyzer Model 4540 characterized fiber dynamics. Results revealed that the rotary blades had a major effect on air flow properties, fiber configuration depended on fiber rigidity and length, fiber orientation varied at different suction levels, and higher levels of suction generated denser web structure. Graphs illustrate the Cartesian coordinates for air velocity measurement and the geometry of the suction chamber. Photomicrographs show fibers after timed intervals. 5 refs.
