An overview of nonwoven fabrics with applications in air filtration addresses the availability of raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and environmental safety. New developments in nonwoven fabric manufacture include the use of lyocell and heat resistant olefin fibers. Key techniques include spunbonding, melt blowing, and composite manufacture. To minimize a product's environmental impact, a life cycle assessment is necessary. However, there is no single solution to the problem of waste disposal. Current waste disposal methods include reduction at source, recycling, composting, incineration, landfilling, or a combination of some or all of these. European goals for the new millennium include reducing landfills to 10 percent, increasing recovery during incineration to more than 30 percent, and recycling more than 60 percent of all industrial waste.
