An overview of the leading manufacturers of nonwoven fabrics describes the business activities of Freudenberg (world sales of $1.4 billion), Du Pont Nonwovens ($1.12 billion), BBA Nonwovens ($812 million), PGI Nonwovens ($722 million), Kimberly-Clark ($640 million), Johns Manville ($485 million), Dexter Corporation ($280 million), Colbond ($185 million), Japan Vilene ($184 million), and Buckeye Technologies/Walkisoft ($180 million). With the exception of Japan Vilene, the leading manufacturers of nonwoven roll goods increased sales in 1999 despite the Asian economic crisis. Many companies improved their rankings via acquisitions. Buckeye Technologies rose from the 30th position to the tenth when it purchased Walkisoft, a German manufacturer of air laid fabrics. Johns Manville's acquisition of the monofilament and spunbonding operations of Hoechst Trevira increased synergies in the roofing sector.
