Medical and healthcare textiles encompass a wide range of products found in operating rooms, hospital wards, local clinics, physicians' offices, nursing homes, dental clinics, pharmacies, and medical laboratories. Because of their technical properties, spun bonded fabrics are competing with conventional industrial woven and knit fabrics. A key consideration in choosing fabrics for medical applications is the reusability of the product. The use of such nonwoven fabrics as Sontara, a polyester/cellulosic hydroentangled blend fabric, offers significant cost savings due to its disposability. Currently, nonwoven fabrics have applications in graduated compression hosiery, packaging for tissues and bones, medical membranes, and cast linings.
