Researchers used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the efficacy of water treatment filtration systems using geotextiles manufactured from nonwoven fabric as filters. Testing materials included needlepunched polypropylene fabric from Amco Fabrics and Fibers Company. Process stages at the Rosedale Water Treatment Plant in Canada included the conventional procedure for municipal water purification, screening to remove large particles, and softening. A Hitachi model S-2500 scanning electron microscope examined the fabrics after filtration. Results revealed that removal of particles varied with time but that the number of particles captured increased over time. SEM analysis clearly showed the occurrence of surface attachment, entrapment between adjacent fibers, and interparticle aggregation. 8 refs.
