Instrumental Measurement of Strain in Nonwoven Geotextile Fabrics

Geotextile and geomembranes experience significant compressive load in situ, which can affect their functional performance of lead to premature failure. The measurement of strain in these fabrics is therefor of critical practical importance. Researchers at the University of Leeds developed a novel approach that uses a quantitative image analysis technique, permitting rapid and accurate measurement of localized strains in nonwoven fabrics for geotexiles subjected to compression by stones, gravel, and other hard materials. This technique integrates with the cylinder performance test that simulates strains impressed on geotextile fabrics in the ground. 4 refs.
