Staple fiber consumption in nonwovens has increased at a compound annual rate of about seven percent per year for the past 15 years. The market share held by the major fibers--polyester, olefin, and rayon--has changed significantly during this time. For example, rayon dominated the market in the early 1970s, but declined in the mid 1970s when polyester was firs used in diaper coverstock and other products. Rayon, however, is still in demand due to its biodegradability and absorbency. The market for polypropylene, polyester, and other fibers is also profiled.
