The history and current status of nonwovens in electrical equipment are detailed. Nonwovens are used to insulate electrical generators, motors, and transformers where heat resistance is the critical factor. Electrical insulation generally consists of a plastic film and a nonwoven mat bonded with a resin that increases the stiffness of the composite. Nonwoven mats, consisting of carrier and binder fibers, are made using dry- and/or wet-lay methods. Important properties for these nonwovens are dimensional stability and purity. 8 refs.
