NON-DESTRUCTIVE FIBER ORIENTATION MEASUREMENT IN NONWOVEN MATERIALS.

The feasibility of monitoring fiber orientation anisotropy parameters and basis weight for nonwoven materials is demonstrated using a submillimeter laser. Experiments confirm that these materials are dichroic at far-infrared wavelength. Two dimensional mapping was performed for fiber orientation anisotropy and misalignment as well as basis weight. The use of submillimeter lasers permits non-destructive high resolution testing, which has potential in online monitoring as soon as small stable lasers are developed. 6 refs.
