The efficiency of paper or nonwoven filters is dependent on pore size, which is controlled by the fiber diameter or coarseness. An equation was derived to express this relationship. The equation was then tested using both paper filters made from different wood pulps and grades of glass microfibers and nonwoven filters made from different deniers of polyester fibers. In each case, fiber diameter was found to be the most important factor in controlling filter efficiency. 4 refs.
