Acrylic latex binders with glass transition temperatures varying from 27 to -16 degrees Centigrade were combined with fiberglass of lengths from one half to one inch; four webs were prepared on an inclined wire former. The machine and cross-machine direction tear resistance properties of these webs were measured using a series of standard and nonstandard tear tests. The utility of each test in discriminating differences in tear strength due to binder composition, fiber length, and fiber orientation is compared. 5 refs.
