One of the main goals of nonwovens manufacturing is the even distribution of latex onto the fibers while maintaining a high level of latex and filler retention. Before production can begin on a new grade, bench testing must be done to determine the operating conditions necessary for achieving the desired product specifications. Bench testing will also show what conditions need to be monitored during production. Two helpful techniques that can be used during bench testing or production are the use of the microscope and determination of system charge. Microscopic observation can show whether latex and fillers are being attached evenly and thoroughly to the fibers. Zeta potential determination can help to reveal the best system charge at which to operate the process.
