A series of nonwoven webs of known fiber and binder composition was selected for analysis with a variety of instrumental techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was found to be useful for identifying binder types. Thermogravimetric analysis gave both qualitative and quantitative composition information. Differential scanning colorimetry composition information. Differential scanning colorimetry served as a confirmation for information obtained by the other techniques. Scanning electron microscopy combined with image analysis was found to be useful in measuring fiber dimensions. 1 ref.
