Individual fiber behavior in a cared web can now be analyzed using a new image analysis technique. The method requires that a small amount of black tracer fiber be introduced during the staple making process. The resulting fiber is formed into fabric on a thermal bonding line. The black fibers are then traced into a PC graphics program, plotted on transparencies, and analyzed on an image analyzer. The image analyzer calculates fiber orientation distributions, fiber curl distributions, mean fiber length, mean fiber width and other properties. 3 refs.
