Increasing growth in the nonwovens industry has create a larger market for specialty fibers. At IDEA 1990, BASF Fibers, Du Pont, and Hoechst Celanese will feature bicomponent fibers using polyester/olefin combinations. Hoechst's bicomponent olefin was originally a Japanese product but is now produced in the United States. The United States' market is expected to triple over the next three years. Du Pont is promoting its spun polyethylene pulp that is used in thermal-bonded hygiene products and in filters. Other fibers attracting attention are cotton, since it is suitable for hydroentanglement manufacturing systems, and Courtauld's Tencel. Both cotton and Tencel meet environmentalists' criteria.
