An aerodynamic process was used to melt spin polypropylene fibers of varying diameters. The fibers were then heat bonded to form materials of varying density and thickness. The acoustical properties of these materials were measured. An equation was derived for the sound absorbing coefficient as a function of sound frequency and the structural properties of the material. The extent of the effect of these properties on the maximum sound absorption coefficient is estimated. 5 refs.
