A method for calculating and optimizing the thermal conductivity of polyester-filled nonwovens is based on a detailed analysis of the heat transmission mechanisms involved. Infra-red optical data, such as the complex wavelength-dependent refractive index, enable the insulting properties to be calculated conditional to fiber fineness. These insulating properties can be used to determine an optimized thermal insulation when considered in conjunction with wearing comfort parameters and economic web material use. These methods could be extended to other synthetic fillers such as polypropylene, polyethlene, and polyamide, and to various down and feather materials. 6 refs.
