In 1999, total shipments by United States manufacturers of olefin, polyester, and rayon staple fibers increased 15 percent to 794 million pounds. Olefin staple fibers accounted for 57 percent of the market, whereas the polyester staple fibers market share fell to 35 percent. Demand for polyester and olefin staple fibers in the nonwoven fabric sector exceeded that in conventional textile sectors. During the 1990s, conventional textile markets for polyester staple fibers stagnated, whereas sales to he nonwoven fabric sector increased 1.6 percent per year despite the loss of market share of olefin staple fibers. Olefin fiber sales increased 7.2 percent per year from 1990-1999. Polyester fiberfill sales increased 9 percent to 421 million pounds.
