Worldwide air laid nonwoven fabric capacity exceeds 280,000 tons per year. Approximately half of this capacity is in Western Europe. Most air laid fabrics are used in the hygiene and disposable diaper markets due to their desirable absorbent properties. Emerging applications for air laid fabrics include filtraton, wound care, hospital drapes, surgical gowns, and other medical textiles. M&J Fibertech A/S's air entangling machines operate at high speeds and manufacture webs with little variation between profiles in the cross direction and machine direction. They combine the advantages of latex and thermal bonding in a single line that operates with minimasl downtime. Preentangling of the carded web ensures good final bonding and minimizes fiber loss. Machines by Dan-Webforming International A/S and Fleissner GmbH & Company are discussed, as are novel bicomponent fibers by Trevira and Fiber Visions A/S.
