Nonwoven fabric consumption in the United States and Canada increased 3.4 percent to over $3 billion in 1999. Consumption is expected to reach 22.3 billion square yards by 2003. Disposable nonwoven fabrics account for 68 percent of the market by value and 83 percent of the market by volume. Disposable applications include filters, wipes, diapers, and hygiene products. Durable applications include protective clothing fabrics, interlinings, carpet backing, upholstery, and geotextiles. Spun bonded fabrics accounted for 62 percent of total consumed nonwoven fabric yardage. Carded and melt blown fabrics accounted for 16 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
