The production of nonwovens using calenders is described. Nonwoven calenders generally have 2 or 3 rollers. The Nipco-L calender is the first genuine 3 roller calender with two nips working in parallel. The most important differences between calenders for nonwovens are the rollers. Heating and cooling mechanisms are in second place. The main uses of calenders for nonwoven production are in thermobonding, surface moulding, laminating, coating, smoothing, compressing, affecting the hand and grooving. Rollers are essentially divided into bend-controlled and conventional. Different types of rollers are combined, the most common combination is steel against steel, but steel/elastic is gaining in importance. Nonwovens are moulded in the calender through the effect of pressure, temperature and speed. Besides these physical parameters, mechanical parameters and material properties of the fabric are also important.
