Alcantara fabric, for applications in the automotive, furnishings and apparel sectors, is made by a proprietary Japanese process from 0.04 or 0.14 denier polyester microfibers which are 200 to 300 times finer than the finest wool, and between 40 to 50 times finer than cotton. The material, whose manufacturing process is described in this article, is well-established in the automotive trade, being employed by major manufacturers such as Lancia, Citroen, Peugeot, Rover, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar.
