The anisotropic characteristics of liquid absorption in nonwoven structures, used in medical textiles and personal hygiene products, can markedly influence their performance in use. The anisotropy of liquid absorption is believed to be influenced by the fibre orientation distribution in the fabric plane. A theoretical analysis of planar fluid transmission and two-dimensional directional permeability in nonwoven structures is presented which takes into account the fibre orientation distribution of the structure. Image analysis is employed to obtain the fibre orientation distribution and experimental results of the directional liquid absorption in nonwovens is presented using a new measuring device.
