Tissue engineering is concerned with the creation of biological substitutes designed to maintain, restore or improve the function of damaged tissues or organs. It is an emerging field that encompasses a range of applications including: the engineering of organs and tissues for implantation into patients; the delivery of biologically active substances to encourage normal cell growth and repair; the delivery of genetically modified cells for the treatment of disease; the production of viable tissue models for the study of normal and abnormal processes in vitro. A common approach in tissue engineering involves the use of porous synthetic or naturally occurring polymeric scaffolds. In this article three examples of needlepunched nonwoven scaffolds are tested. One of the test materials shows promise as a scaffold for the production of living akin.
