Disclosed is a surgical suture needle point inspection system that utilizes a backlight to project a silhouette of the needle onto an optical sensor for computer analysis. The system comprises an indexing turntable where the needle is held stationary by a clamp, and an optical sensor provided at one of three stations. These stations consist of a needle loading station and two pre-inspection process stations that may involve needle straightening wheels and brushes, or ultra-fine grinding wheels for repolishing the tip. If the needle is found to be acceptable, the needle continues to a curving station and further additional processing steps. If a fault is detected, the needle is immediately discarded or electronically tagged for rejection at a subsequent station in the system.
