A survey of 30 large and small nonwovens industry companies in the United States and Europe, including roll goods manufacturers, suppliers, fiber manufacturers, machinery manufacturers, and end product manufacturers, as well as their customers, addresses recent trends, market data, industry dynamics, and future prospects. According to EDANA, world nonwoven fabric production grew 7 percent per year, reaching 2.4 million tons in 1998. Market data indicate that production is shifting from developed countries to developing countries. The hygiene market is the largest sector, followed by civil engineering, wipes, and filtration. In 1998, spun laid fabrics accounted for 43 percent of production, followed by dry laid (42 percent), wet laid (8 percent), and other fabrics (7 percent). Consolidation among roll goods manufacturers should slow down and production should continue to decline in developed countries.
