The Saxon Textile Research Institute and Karl Mayer developed the Kunit and Multiknit processes for manufacturing nonwoven fabrics with fibers arranged perpendicularly to the length of the fabric, which achieves sufficient rebound pressure for use in automobile upholstery. The Kunit process directly feeds a longitudinally oriented fiber weft produced by a carding machine into the working elements of a stitch bonding machine, which results in fiber creasing and the creation of fiber loops. Heat treatment stabilizes the pile layer and improves elasticity while closing the open structure of the Kunit nonwoven fabric. The resultant Caliweb material costs less and has a smaller environmental impact than polyurethane foam.
