A review of nonwoven fabric manufacturing systems describes textile, paper, and extrusion processes relative to fiber selection and preparation, web formation, and web consolidation. Hybrid structures based on nonwoven fabrics expand market potential by providing high performance products for specific applications. Processes that manufacture these structures include combining two or more nonwoven fabrics manufactured by basic systems, methods that provide a combination of fabric properties, and manufacturing true composites. Examples of methods that combine fabrics or provide a combination of properties include the spunbonding-melt blowing-spunbonding process and Kimberly-Clark's scruim reinforced materials process. Examples of methods that manufacture true composites include Kimberly-Clark's Coform process, which yields three dimensional products, such as face masks.
