Experiments produced antibacterial cotton and polyester blend needle punched webs with varying fiber content (10/90, 20/80, and 30/70 cotton/polyester) by spraying a dilute aqueous dispersion of an environmentally safe antibacterial agent (magnesium hydroperoxyacetate) on the webs prior to needle punching, followed by drying, curing, and needle punching. Differential scanning calorimetry and peroxide content characterized the composition of the antibacterial agent. Iodometric titration determined the composition of the antibacterial agent in the needle punched webs. untreated and treated samples had comparable physical properties, including bursting strength and stiffness, but the treated samples also had excellent antibacterial activity at peroxide contents as low as 0.22 percent. Applications include air filters, wall coverings, automotive fabrics, and interlinings. 3 refs.
