Controlled Fabrication of Nanoporous Membrane Using beta-Ray Irradiation.

Researchers prepared nanoporous membranes from the self assembled film of a diblock copolymer consisting of polyvinylethylene (PVE) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Decomposition and selective removal of the backbones of PMMA via beta-irradiation and soaking in ethl lactate provided a porous membrane consisting of crosslinked PVE with three dimensionally continuous pores. This novel method for realizing nanoporous membranes is inexpensive and may be suitable for the large scale manufacture of continuous films and coatings. 4 refs.
