World nonwoven roll good sales reached $9.76 billion in 1999. Forty manufacturers accounted for 90 percent of world sales with ten manufacturers, (Freudenberg, Du Pont, BBA Nonwovens, PGI Nonwovens, Kimberly-Clark, Johns Manville, Ahlstrom/Dexter, Japan Vilene, Buckeye Technologies, and Colbond) accounting for 64 percent of world sales. Freudenberg concentrates its business in the filtration, hygiene, interlining sectors. Du Pont's joint venture in Brazil will manufacture Sontara fabrics and increase Du Pont's share of the footwear market. The hygiene sector accounts for 47 percent of BBA's total sales. PGI implemented its largest capital expansion program in 1999, adding new facilities and capacity in Asia, South American, and North America. Ahlstrom's acquisition of Dexter Corporation Nonwoven Materials moved it from 35th to 7th on the list of leading manufacturers.
