Researchers derived two equations for calculating the pore size and fluid permeability of polypropylene nonwoven fabrics. Although experimental data agreed with theoretical data for melt blown fabrics, discrepancies occurred in needle punched fabrics. The FE of a composite filter media was accurately predicted from the FE of each constituent layer. Calculations using the fiber orientation distribution function predicted the directional strength of a nonwoven web. 6 refs.
