Nonwoven cotton fabrics offer superior comfort, absorbency, and wet strength properties for such applications as wound dressings, orthopedic bandages, and surgical gowns and drapes. Research determined optimal blends of cotton and other fabrics for nonwoven fabrics for medical applications. Bleaching and scouring increased the absorbency and breaking strength of cotton-rich fabrics. Needle punched fabrics had higher absorbency capacities, whereas hydroentangled fabrics had higher flexural rigidity and longer liquid strikethrough times. Models based on area density and bulk density predicted needle punched fabric properties. Models based on area density and thickness predicted such hydroentangled fabric properties as tensile strength, air permeability, flexural rigidity, and some liquid interaction properties. These models determined optimal fiber blends.
