Novel lyocell fiber reinforced composites use cellulose (mixed) esters as the matrix. Continuos filaments reinforce the thermoplastic matrix, which adheres strongly to the cellulosic fiber surfaces without compatibilizers. Composites with a fiber content of 60 percent possess tensile modulus of greater than 20 gigapascals. Compared with similar composites reinforced with glass fibers, the cellulose reinforced composites are light weight and do not irriate the skin.
