Flexible composites manufactured from fiber or fabric reinforced elastomers have applications in the manufacture of pneumatic tires, air springs, flexible couplings, diaphragms, and other membrane structures. These feature a rubber matrix that is less rigid than the reinforcing fibers in conventional composites. An overview of unidirectional cord reinforced rubber composites and rubber coated fabrics addresses orthotropic elasticity, composites with an interply rubber layer, tire belt structures, and the stiffness of radial tire sidewalls. Developing effective analytical methods for these composites is difficult due to the complexity of their mechanical properties. 49 refs.
