Fourier transform infrared and thermal gravimetric analyses established the effectiveness of different surface modifications of jute based samples (hessian cloth, HC and yarn, and JY) as reinforcements in composites manufactured from the biodegradable polymer matrix Biopol. JY reinforced composites exhibited a 100 percent increase in tensile strength and a 50 percent increase in bending strength. Hessian cloth reinforced composite exhibited a 60 percent increase in tensile strength and a 30 percent increase in bending strength. Scanning electron microscopy established that surface modification improved the fiber-matrix adhesion. Degradation studies determined that the weight of jute/Biopol composites declined 55 percent after six months of compost burial. Abstract.
