An introduction to nonlinear stress-strain relationships in fabrics addresses the mechanical properties of woven and knit fabrics and their role in composites. The biaxial extension theory describes a fabric structure with parameters determined by the warp and weft density and the crimp shrinkage in both driections. The shear deformation theory and bending deformation theory use similar models for desicribing plain woven fabrics. A modified linear theory of elasticity describes the biaxial extension relationships of knit fabrics having nonlinear behavior. In a composite matrix, the displacement of fibers becomes restricted and the reinforcing fabric becomes more rigid as its deformability increases. Accurate prediction of this displacement involves calculation of torque constants, shear forces, critical stretch ratios, and tensile deformation in the bending and elongation regions.
