A study of the tensile modulus, maximum stress in tension, and elongation at maximum stress of thermally point bonded nonwoven fabrics bonded at different bonding temperatures used image acquisition and analysis methods to identify failure mechanisms and quantify fiber orientation distribution function, bond region strain, and unit cell strain during controlled deformation. Data indicated that failure of thermally bonded nonwoven fabrics depended on critical-stress based criteria. The source of failure changed from fiber/fiber interfacial failures within the bonds at the bonded/nonbonded interfaces at high bonding temperatures. Shear along the preferred direction of fiber orientation dictated failure under most conditions. 9 refs.
