Researchers investigated the effects of the mechanical and surface properties of cotton fibers on capillary absorption in nonwoven fabrics. The gravimetric absorbency testing system consisting of a balance and two sensors measured the capacity and rate of absorbency. A dynamic contact angle experiment measured the surface energies of cotton, Galaxy rayon, and conventional rayon fibers. Analysis of mechanical properties revealed that fabric thickness and pore size affected absorbent capacity. Fabric structure and the bending rigidity of the component fibers affected resiliency. An increase in pressure resulted in a decrease in capacity and rate of absorbency. Fluid properties and surface properties affected the rate of absorbency. 12 refs.
