A personal computer based imaging system for evaluating the interactions between liquids and textiles characterized the spreading and generation of droplets on nonwoven fabrics. The imaging system consisted of a high speed digital camera with a video zoom lens, image acquisition board, Pentium computer, and light source. Computer software controlled the camera, displayed images on the screen in real time, and stored data in memory. The images revealed that film breakup initiated with the formation of stationary waves. The amplitude of the waves increased until a droplet formed. Neighboring droplets formed on nylon fibers more readily than on Teflon fibers. Smaller droplets, however, formed between larger droplets on Teflon fibers. Analysis of the application of liquid spray showed that droplets formed at crossed fibers. The size of these droplets depended on the surface energy of the intersecting fibers. 9 refs.
