Researchers compared the theoretical and experimental characterization of melt blown polypropylene fabrics with low, medium, and high fiber orientation distributions to optimize design parameters. A Coulter Porometer II measured pore size. A Frazier testing machine determined air permeability according to ASTM D737. Scanning electron microscopy determined fiber diameter. The Tsai permeability equation and an equation based on Hagen-Poisulla's law agreed with experimental data. A discrepancy, however, existed between the data generated by the porometer and theoretical predications of permeability and pore size. The fiber orientation distribution function calculated fabric directional strength. 6 refs.
