An overview of developments in battery separators manufactured from nonwoven fabrics addresses improvements in wettability, shutdown capability, temperature resistance, and life cycle; separators by battery type; and such other applications as fuel cells, flywheel batteries, and capacitors. Researchers at Exxon identified the potential of nonwoven polypropylene fabric as a battery separator in the mid 1960s. Japan consumed 10.5 million square meters of electrode separators for nickel cadmium and nickel hydrogen batteries in 1996. Trends indicate more than 3 million cellular phones will be in operation by 2003, which will drive demand for more efficient batteries. Several nonwoven fabric manufacturers are developing applications for nonwoven fabrics in fuel cells for power plants. Appendixes list patents issued from 1967-1991. 39 refs.
