The mature staple fiber market continues to experience mergers, consolidations, and a balance of consumption and production capacities. Trends in fiber cutting and crimping machines include the increased use of electronically regulated tension control devices for improved cut length distribution. Developments in radial blade reel design increased short cut fiber manufacturing speeds. Some facilities manufacture staple fibers as short as 6 millimeters at rates faster than 5 tons per hour. Functional cutting load indicators correlate cutting condition to production runs. Because many bicomponent fibers have a sheath that requires low roll pressure in crimping machines, some manufactures are experimenting with textured roll surface.
