Such natural fibers as virgin and secondary wood pulp, unbleached and bleached cotton, flax, kenaf, and hemp have increasing applications in nonwoven fabrics. Advantages include performance, added value, disposability, and sustainability of raw materials. The high level of production flexibility in nonwoven fabric processes permits the use of these fibers in a wide range of products. FlaXlin Oy of Finland's integrated forming and bonding system processes 85 percent flax and 15 percent polyester bicomponent binder fibers to manufacture an 8 inch thick batt for industrial and residential insulation. 12 refs.
