Cotton core nonwoven composites are thermally bonded laminates featuring inner fabrics of bleached cotton staple fibers and outer layers of melt blown and/or spun bonded polypropylene fabrics that serve as binder fibers during thermal bonding. The outer layers transport liquid from the surface to the absorbent cotton core. Experiments characterizing the versatility, strength, wetting, and wicking properties of cotton core nonwoven composites determined that core weight affected wicking, absorbent capacity, and retention capacity. Spun bonded polypropylene fabrics were stronger and had better wicking, absorbent capacity, and retention capacity than did melt blown fabrics due to their higher void content. Lighter weight melt blown polypropylene in the outer layers improved wicking performance. 10 refs.
